* Jan P. Turek has been named the new president and CEO of Biolex Inc. of Pittsboro. Turek was previously senior vice president and general manager for the pharmaceutical division of Bayer Corp.'s biological products business unit in Raleigh. He will apply the global biopharmaceutical experience he gained at Bayer to help take Biolex's technology to the next level and identify new opportunities for the company.

Gabriel R. Cipau, Ph.D., Biolex's former president and CEO, will remain with Biolex on the company's board of directors.

* Salix Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (Nasdaq: SLXP) of Raleigh has appointed Joseph Tyler to the post of vice president of operations. Tyler will use his experience in contract manufacturing to help Salix develop and maintain relationships with outside manufacturers of Salix's drug products. Tyler was most recently vice president of manufacturing for GelTex Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Waltham, Mass.

* PPD Inc. of Wilmington has appointed B. Judd Hartman to the post of general counsel. He was most recently vice president of legal affairs for Anker Energy Corp. of Morgantown, W. Va.

* ArgoMed Inc. of Cary has appointed Steve McPhail to the post of executive vice president and chief operations officer. McPhail will handle marketing, reimbursement and commercialization activities. He most recently held a similar position at Xanthon Inc. of Research Triangle Park.

* PharmaNet Inc. of Research Triangle Park has appointed Dr. Francis Wouters, Ph.D., to the post of senior director of business development. Wouters was most recently vice president of sales and marketing for MiniDoc of Stockholm, Sweden.
