UNC-CH pharmacology researchers have successfully used gene knockout technology in mice to identify a key molecular player in alcohol-induced liver disease. Led by Dr. Ming Yin, the study pinpointed tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) as the liver injury culprit. The hormone-like protein is produced in the liver and cells throughout the body.

Prior to this study, the protein's role in liver disease was unclear. Dr. Ronald G. Thurman, the study's senior author, said the knockout technology will help to develop drug therapies for the disease, which affects 11 million people in the U.S. alone.
