* Dr. Ken Tindall and Dr. Carol Haney, senior scientists with strong ties to government and university laboratories in North Carolina, have joined the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.
Tindall was named to the new position of senior vice president for science and business development. He will also coordinate a new North Carolina Genomics and Bioinformatics Consortium, which is expected to marshal the research capabilities of university, company and government laboratories.
Prior to joining the Biotechnology Center, Tindall was a tenured geneticist and head of the Molecular Mutagenesis Group at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park.
Haney was named director of science and technology development, a program that administers grants to universities and coordinates intellectual exchange programs. Prior to joining the Biotechnology Center, Haney was a program officer for the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., and director of mass spectrometry and a visiting professor of chemistry at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
* Quintiles Transnational Corp. (Nasda: QTRN) of Research Triangle Park has appointed Neil MacAllister to chief executive officer of its commercialization unit, Innovex. MacAllister was previously senior vice president of strategic development and planning for Quintiles.
* Paradigm Genetics Inc. (Nasdaq: PDGM) of Research Triangle Park has appointed Ellen T. Corliss to the new position of vice president of corporate communications. Corliss was previously with Embrex Inc. of Research Triangle Park. In related news, John Ryals, Ph.D., the company's president and CEO, has been appointed to the Biotechnology Industry Organization's (BIO) executive committee, the BIO board of directors, and the newly established BIO Food and Agriculture Governing Body for the 2000-2001 term.
* Lynn Collins-Gold, Ph.D., has been promoted to vice president of innovation at Fresenius Kabi Clayton R&D Inc. in Clayton. She most recently served as director of research and development at the facility.
* Embrex Inc. (Nasdaq: EMBX) of Research Triangle Park has named Diana Maria Alcazar, D.V.M., to the post of product manager of biologics. Before joining Embrex, Alcazar consulted for several animal health companies and held various management positions for the Central American locations of Boehringer Ingelheim S.A. and Solvay Animal Health Inc.
* Cary Kinross-Wright has joined Intersouth Partners of Durham as an associate. Kinross-Wright is Intersouth Partners' third Kauffman Fellow, a two-year educational program for future venture capitalists offered by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City, Missouri.
* Paul Dreyer has been promoted to executive vice president of commercial operations at Triangle Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: VIRS) of Durham. Dreyer has been with the company since 1998 and was formerly vice president of marketing and sales. Robin Fastenau has been named director of investor relations. She has a background in corporate finance at various banking institutions.
* Gerard McGarrity, Ph.D, has been named the new CEO of Intronn LLC of Durham. McGarrity, who will help the small company attain its next level of growth, has extensive experience in genetics, research and regulatory issues. Most recently, he was chief scientific officer of Cambridge Genetics Ltd. of Cambridge, U.K.
* Geron Corp. (Nasdaq: GERN) of Menlo Park, Calif., and Merix Bioscience Inc. of Research Triangle Park will collaborate on the development of a telomerase-based cancer immunotherapy for clinical and commercial applications. Geron and Merix will assess the clinical and commercial potential of the antigen using Merix's delivery system. Under the terms of the collaboration, Geron will sponsor preclinical studies at Duke, and Merix will perform parallel studies.
* PPGx Inc. of Morrisville and the Bioinformatics Research Center at North Carolina State University in Raleigh have launched a partnership whereby researchers from both will develop and implement statistical methodologies to speed and enhance the analysis and interpretation of pharmacogenomic data.
* PharmaNetics Inc. (Nasdaq: PHAR) of Raleigh and Aventis Pharmaceuticals of Parsippany, N.Y., have signed a five-year agreement to partner in the development and commercialization of a new therapeutic diagnostic test for use with Aventis' enoxaparin sodium, its low-molecular-weight heparin for the prevention and treatment of deep-vein thrombosis, unstable angina and non-Q wave myocardial infarction. PharmaNetics will receive mileston payments from Aventis.
* Inspire Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ISPH) of Durham has licensed the rights to develop and commercialize its INS316 diagnostic test for lung cancer in Asia to Kirin Brewery Co. Ltd., of Tokyo, Japan. Under the terms of the agreement, Inspire will receive upfront and milestone payments and royalties.
