Biogen Building Second Plant

BT Catalyst, Dec, 1999

Biogen Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., has started construction of a 250,000-square-foot drug production plant at its Research Triangle Park campus.

The large-scale manufacturing plant, scheduled to open in late 2001 or early 2002, will manufacture new drug candidates that could be marketed commercially in as little as two to four years.

Biogen currently has a 100,000-square-foot plant in the park that employs 125 people involved in the manufacture of Avonex, the world's top selling multiple sclerosis drug. This plant cost $57 million to build in 1996.

Approximately 75 to 100 employees will be added to Biogen's payroll in the park when the new plant opens.

Biogen has not yet disclosed the cost of the facility or the actual products that will be manufactured there. Lisa Easley, the company's spokesperson, said an official groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for the first quarter of the new year will provide these details.
