Federal Communications Commission - approves Qwest's acquisition of US West - Company Business and Marketing - Brief Article

CommunicationsWeek International, March 20, 2000

The Federal Communications Commission has approved long-distance carrier Qwest Communications International Inc.'s $36 billion acquisition of regional carrier US West Inc., subject to a planned sell-off of some long-distance customers. The merger, which had been under pressure from a now-abandoned bid by Deutsche Telekom, has already been approved by shareholders and the Justice Department.

The regional Bell operating company is still barred under the 1996 Telecoms Act from offering long-distance service until it proves it has opened its local market to competition from rivals.
