* A consortium of more than 40 companies will build the 19,000-kilometer, $1.09-billion submarine cable APCN2 that will link China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. The Asia-Pacific Cable Network 2 project is led by Singapore Telecom, which will invest $40 million.

Japan's NEC has been awarded an $800-million contract to supply the undersea cable system rated at 2.5 terabits per second.
