China Unicom Group, the state-owned telecoms company, announced it will build a nationwide CDMA mobile phone network worth an estimated $2.4 billion in contracts. Despite sound profits in 2000, China Unicom and another operator, China Mobile, have been faced with sliding stock value because of the loss of confidence in Europe and the U.S.
