Cisco Systems, Inc. of San Jose, California, announced it would discontinue making optical-networking products created by Monterey Networks, a company acquired for $500 million 18 months ago. Cisco had planned for the acquisition to be its first move into fiber optics, but the equipment, which routes light through optic networks, has been beset with technical problems.
