Internet software companies are showing signs of the economic downturn. Cancelled contracts at Akamai, Ariba, Inktomi and BroadVision meant that all four reported losses in second-quarter earnings. 12 said that their earnings increased by 2 cents a share, compared to expectations of 5 cents a share.

Akamai Technologies announced that it was cutting 14% of its staff as a result of a drop off in business.
