DSL: GlobeSpan's SDSL Selected as International Standard For Single Pair HDSL - Company Business and Marketing

GlobeSpan Semiconductor Inc., the leading developer of digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, applauded the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) approval of GlobeSpan's Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) technology as the standard for high-performance single pair HDSL transmission at E1 rates over existing copper phone lines. SDSL provides a dramatically lower cost solution for high-speed data services primarily deployed in European, Asian, Australian and South American markets.

Developed by GlobeSpan, the SDSL transceiver technology is designed to provision the full T1 (1.544 Mbps) or E1 bit rate (2.048 Mbps) over a single twisted wire pair. Unlike traditional HDSL systems, which use two twisted pair, SDSL reduces equipment and lease-line costs by providing the same service using only one twisted pair and one modem at each end. SDSL is the only commercially available technology that meets the high-performance objectives of ETSI and the ITU, and achieves reach greater than 4 km on 0.4 mm wire over a single pair. GlobeSpan's SDSL technology is endorsed by ITU Recommendation G.991.1 as the standard for one or two pair solutions.

GlobeSpan's SDSL transceiver technology provides E1 transmission equipment and service providers with the same benefits as HDSL2 technology, currently under development for T1 equipment in North America. SDSL provides raw transmission rates of up to 2.32 Mbps over a single copper twisted pair wire without spectral disturbance of other DSL services in adjacent wire pairs, such as ISDN, traditional two pair HDSL or ADSL.
