Bellcore, the telecommunications pioneer responsible for designing the modern U.S. telecommunications system, Tuesday began operating as Telcordia Technologies -- a new name reflecting the company's expertise in communications technology and its ability to reach "accord" among major communications service providers that allows seamless network interconnection.
The company also unveiled a suite of major Next Generation Network products and services to help service providers and new start-ups leverage the multi-billion dollar market erupting from the convergence of voice, video and data services. These products and services are designed to transform legacy networks into Next Generation Networks, and to drive powerful improvements in the speed, cost, scalability and adaptability of global communications.

As Bellcore, the company developed many of the core technologies integral to the evolution of communications networks, from circuit-switched, voice-only networks to packet-switched, high-speed broadband networks that are more efficient to build and less costly to operate.
As Telcordia Technologies, the company is leading in the development of Next Generation Networks that can deliver existing services (cable, Internet, voice and data service), as well as new offerings (e-commerce, unified messaging, voice over packet services) over a single network.
"For the past year, we've been aggressively pursuing the network technologies of the future," said Richard C. Smith, Telcordia Technologies CEO. "As a result, we are seeing rapid progress in making Next Generation Networks a reality -- much faster than anyone would have expected. As Telcordia Technologies, we'll continue our role as the acknowledged leader at the center of critical developments in large scale telecommunications infrastructure."
"Bellcore always has been known for industrial-strength, `bullet-proof' solutions," said John Malone, CEO of The Eastern Management Group. "In today's highly competitive and rapidly evolving telecommunications environment, the company is providing powerful Next Generation Network solutions to a range of customers traditional communications providers such as the Regional Bell Operating Companies, new entrants to the telephony market and Fortune 1000 companies. It will be interesting to watch as the company continues to help our communications networks evolve."
"Telcordia Technologies will continue to rely on the highly talented and creative employees who made Bellcore a success - researchers and developers who created groundbreaking technologies such as ADSL, AIN, ATM, ISDN, Frame Relay, PCS, SMDS, SONET and video-on-demand solutions," said Sanjiv Ahuja, president and chief operating officer, Telcordia Technologies. "With the explosive growth of data services, we are leveraging our expertise in networks to bring a carrier grade level of quality and reliability to the new, converged voice and data networks."
Telcordia Technologies Equals "Performance from Experience" The line "Performance from Experience" in company communications will accompany the name Telcordia Technologies as a reference to the extraordinary role the company has played in the development of the world's telecommunications infrastructure. The bright blue banner within the Telcordia Technologies logo design provides a color connection to Telcordia's parent company Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).
The new name was unveiled at all company locations Tuesday, and will be supported via direct marketing, advertising and public relations efforts.
Commencing operations in 1984 as a consortium to provide engineering and administrative services to the Regional Bell Operating Companies, Bellcore pioneered many of today's widely deployed telecommunications services, such as caller name identification, call waiting and toll free numbers. As part of the contractual agreement related to the company's purchase in 1997 by SAIC, Bellcore was required to change its name. As Telcordia Technologies, the company offers more than 800 software solutions and holds more than 1,400 domestic and foreign patents.
Telcordia Technologies, an SAIC company, provides software, engineering, consulting and training services to optimize the performance of communication networks worldwide.
