Cold school

Food & Drug Packaging, Dec, 2006

There's nothing more satisfying on a hot summer day than throwing back a "cold one." Unless, of course, your cold one has been taking a siesta in the sun and is now a "lukewarm one."

Thanks to Labatt Breweries of Canada, beer drinkers everywhere can keep their cool for a little bit longer. The specially engineered Labatt Blue Cold One cans are wrapped with Cool2Go, a thin, insulating layer which protects beer from heat transferred from warm hands, condensation and outside temperature. The 30- to 40-mil wrap is made by placing a high-tech, polyester fiberfill insulation between two layers of Melinex film from DuPont Teijin Films.

The cans are filled and seamed by Labatt's London, Ontario brewery, and the labeling material is printed on Multi-Color Corp. gravure printers. The insulated labels are applied by a customized shrink labeling system from Alliance Labeling, with the Labatt logo highlighted with silver metallic ink.

The whole package is an attractive individual cooler for each can.

Now that's hot.
