The SmartLase[TM] Coder uses low-power C[O.sub.2] radiation to permanently mark primary packages with substrates including PET or paperboard. Characters are in the dot matrix format and can be generated at 400 characters per second. The system can be controlled using Markem's CimContol[TM] networking software from a networked PC.
