Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedReducing the risk of artwork errors: An interview with David Perlis, director of technology Global Vision Inc
Food & Drug Packaging, March, 2005
Q: What are the major w risks resulting from artwork errors?
A: Artwork errors can have a disastrous impact upon labor costs, material costs, time-to-market, brand equity, corporate image and liability. Undetected errors at any point in the artwork development process can be unknowingly passed on to the next stage. I believe that a comprehensive solution requires the integration of electronic proofreading systems into the artwork process.
Q: How can an electronic proofreading system eliminate artwork errors?

A: The DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3] Copy + Content Comparator has the ability to instantly detect errors at the earliest stages of artwork development. By electronically comparing revisions against previous versions, users can easily detect errors using automated proofreading tools instead of labor-intensive, manual proofreading techniques. Eliminating errors begins with what we refer to as "Error-Proofing" of the text copy--before it gets integrated into the artwork file. Error-Proofing continues at the graphics stage with the inspection of the approved manuscript against the typeset artwork (PDF file).
Q: What is DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3]?
A: DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3] is a breakthrough technology that compares unlike [dissimilar] document layouts in any language. In the past, text inspection was always limited to comparing like [similar] documents, where embedded text and graphics were impossible to inspect and proofread. DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3] is both a text reader and PDF inspection solution for the pharmaceutical, printing, financial, publishing and cosmetics industries.
Q: What are the benefits of implementing DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3]?
A: The most important, measurable benefits to these industries are time savings and error elimination. Our field-testing with customers has revealed that DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3] reduces inspection time from hours to only seconds. This dramatically accelerates time-to-market while significantly increasing quality.
Q: How does DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3] integrate into a typical workflow?
A: Since DOCU-PROOF [C.sup.3] inspects a wide range of file types, including XML, RTF and especially PDF, it can easily and quickly integrate into any stage of the workflow process. This is, I believe, a key to solving the problems related to artwork errors, regardless of whether they originate with the regulatory, graphics, QA/QC or marketing departments.
