Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedVial caps time dosage intervals
Food & Drug Packaging, August, 2002 by Pan Demetrakakes
Pharmaceutical packaging closures are now available that let consumers knew when they took their last dose.
The Pill Timer, from Med Time Technology Inc., and the Smart Cap, from Pharmaceutical Direct Inc., are closures for prescription medication vials with readouts that help the patient take the medication properly. When the closure is removed and replaced, the readout counts forward, indicating to consumers how long it has been since they took their last dose of medicine.
The major difference between the two is that the Pill Timer features an alarm function: When a preset interval is surpassed, an alarm sounds and the readout flashes, prompting the consumer to take the next dose. The alarm can be programmed in intervals of one to 24 hours, by either the pharmacist or the consumer.

The Smart Cap has no alarm, which was a deliberate decision by Pharmaceutical Direct, says company president Scott Puzia. No alarm means a longer-lasting battery and a product that's less expensive and easier to use, Puzia says.
Both companies are exploring distribution possibilities through drag manufacturers, doctors, pharmacies and other outlets. The CVS drugstore chain has adopted the Pill Timer, says Med Time Technology president Craig Schreiber. Several major pharmaceutical companies and pharmacy chains are testing the Smart Cap, according to Puzia.
