Food & Drug Packaging, Sept, 2003

* Clos du Bois, Fetzer and Amusant are the first three wines to test-market the MetaCork, a new closure from Gardner Technologies (www.gardnertech.com) that combines the convenience of a screw cap with the tradition of a cork.

The cork is connected to a capsule which, as it turns, easily pulls out the cork. At Clos du Bois, use of the MetaCork costs 50 cents more per bottle, an increase that won't be passed on to customers, according to public relations director Megan Driscol. She says the investment is being used to gauge reaction to the innovation. The MetaCork will appear on 900,000 cases of the company's Sonoma County Chardonnay, which sells for $14.
