"When our cashiers see someone come in, they say, 'Hi,'" he said. "The people who work here walk down the aisles, and even if someone needs help in another department, they're ready to help them."

This is the legacy Andre wants to pass on to his children, both of whom are actively involved in the business. Son Andy is the operations manager and daughter Suzanne Springer does the computer work and bookkeeping. Andre also sees a long-term role for Tom Toth, the 29-year-old mer chandise manager who has worked at Prescott True Value since he was 16. As he eases into a supervisory role, Andre expects this younger team to continue the company's tradition of specialization and service that has driven his business for two decades.

"We are noted as the best retail organization for service in our community, and we need to continue to offer superior customer service," he said. "And we've got to continue to make ourselves different from the competition, both in our assortment of merchandise and in presentation. You've got to offer something the others don't."
