Habitat constructs first pressure-treated home - Brief Article

Home Channel News, July 17, 2000

Habitat for Humanity, the charitable builder of affordable homes, last month debuted a home in New Orleans that is the first the organization has constructed exclusively with pressure-treated Southern yellow pine. This kind of wood was used to repel the Formosan termite, which has been gnawing away at Southern homes for several seasons.

The 8,500 board feet of lumber was purchased at cost from Elder Wood Preserving in Mansura, La., which will donate the materials for the second house. This project, dubbed "Harry's House on Music Street," was partly supported by musician Harry Connick Jr., whose benefit concern at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in May raised $100,000 for Habitat.
