The wood look is not popular for kitchens in China, where consumers gravitate more toward colorful plastic laminates. Kitchen vignettes in home improvement stores display cranberry red, tangerine orange and mustard yellow cabinets. Female consumers tend to make many of the decisions about kitchen remodels, although the power is shifting.
"Men in Shanghai are doing more cooking," observed a design consultant at Obi. As a result, men are taking more of an interest in kitchen layout and appliances. Husbands, she noted, tend to be more price conscious than their wives.
