Web readers weigh in on the 9/11 aftermath

The terrorist attacks in New York and Washington have unified the United States and have prompted many individuals and companies to offer any assistance they can. What measures could the home improvement industry take in this time of tragedy and crisis?

Sept. 13 through 25, 2001

A) Companies should mobilize their work forces to donate blood and, longer term, products and money that could help victims of the attacks.

B) Building materials should be offered -- through donations or at significant discounts -- to business and commercial companies that plan to rebuild after the attacks.

C) While respecting the legal and constitutional rights of individuals, companies need to re-evaluate their hiring policies and procedures to be able to better assess the backgrounds of potential job candidates.

President Bush has said that the terrorist attacks have "affected our economy." That economy, as many dealers and suppliers know, has been soft for most of this year. What are the short- and long-range ramifications of the attacks?

Sept. 25 through Oct. 11, 2001

A) Wall Street will take the most unmediate hit, making the availability of investment capital for growth tighter.

B) Consumer confidence will continue to decline, even as many Americans profess their confidence that their country remains "strong."

C) Historically, declarations of war have been a boost to the U.S. economy, which could actually benefit from any immediate actions taken by the Bush administration against terrorists and countries that harbor them.

D) In a globalized economy, stability is imperative. War in any form, and for any length, is likely to disrupt economies worldwide.
