The company's retrenchment plan includes the elimination of 4,900 salaried positions over the next 18 months and a greater emphasis on core product categories. Sears customers will first notice the changes, starting with a "self-service environment" in many of its stores. Centralized check-outs will he installed in approximately 140 units by the end of the year.
Sears also reported its third-quarter earnings of $262 million -- a slight jump from a third quarter 2000 net income of $261 million. (10/24)
