GE and Emcore target "white light" market. Cleveland-based GE Lighting and Emcore of Somerset, NJ., have formed a joint venture targeting the "white light" LEDs, or light-emitting diode market. The new company, Gelcore LLC, will develop and market LEDs as replacements for miniature car, compact fluorescent, halogen and traditional incandescent lighting, the companies said.

The joint venture expects to introduce its first commercial white light products in the second half of 1999. Industry sales of LED technology are expected to reach the $1 billion sales mark within the next decade, the companies projected.
