Wholesaler group elects industry president as chairman - Brief Article

Home Channel News, March 6, 2000

The Washington based National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors, an umbrella group representing more than 40,000 companies, elected Byron Potter as its chairman for 2000. Potter is president and CEO of the Desoto, Texas-based distributor Dallas Wholesale Builders Supply.

"Distributors are going through some pretty alarming times because of the Internet," said Potter, who added that, more than at any time in recent history, the distributors' role in the market is being questioned because of "nontraditional" competition. He pointed specifically to United Parcel Service on "logistics" and American Express on "credit."

Potter expected that "40 to 50 percent of my time" would be spent handling "political" duties of "communicating to our members which policies NAW supports that promote distribution."
