The parent of NHCN chose Home Depot as the best home improvement chain and Sears as the best department store

NEW YORK -- Home Depot's president, CEO and chief operating officer, Arthur Blank, and Sears' chairman and CEO, Arthur Martinez, were among seven executives who accepted Retailer of the Century awards in late March at the Best of Century dinner celebration, held in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of Lebhar-Friedman, the parent company of National Home Center News.

Never before has there been such a concentration of retail and food service industry leaders in attendance at one event.

The complete list of winners -- home improvement chain: Home Depot; supermarket chain: Kroger; restaurant chain: McDonald's; department store: Sears; hard goods specialty store: Toys 'R' Us; drug chain: Walgreens; and discount chain: Wal-Mart.

The home improvement award was sponsored by Newell-Rubbermaid.
