People infected with AIDS increase in Asia: U.N
Asian Economic News, April 5, 1999
NEW YORK, April 1 Kyodo The number of people in Asia who have been infected with AIDS is estimated to have risen about 800,000 since June to about 7.2 million people, a U.N. organization said Thursday. The Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) warned that the situation may be exacerbated by the ongoing economic crisis in Asia as infected youths return to the countryside after losing jobs in the city.
The organization, formed from six organizations including the World Health Organization and the World Bank, said the increases have been especially prominent in Cambodia, India, Myanmar, and Thailand.
