HONG KONG, June 4 Kyodo

Hong Kong stores have been ridding their shelves of poultry, eggs, pork and related products from four European countries for fear they might have been contaminated by toxic chemicals, health authorities said Friday.

Traders and retailers started withdrawing these products from Belgium, France, Germany and the Netherlands on Thursday, the Department of Health said in a statement.

The government said it has received information that animal feeds used in the four countries might have been contaminated by dioxin.

Samples of the products would be collected for testing, the statement said.

The department is working with consulate representatives of these countries to find out which products had not been affected and to ensure the affected products had not been exported to Hong Kong.
