SINGAPORE, Jan. 17 Kyodo

Singapore's biggest Internet service provider has teamed up with a U.S. provider to develop free Internet service in the Asia-Pacific region, Singapore Telecom (SingTel) said Monday.

SingNet, a subsidiary of SingTel, has entered into a strategic alliance with Freei.Net Asia Pacific, SingTel said in a statement.

Based in Kuala Lumpur, Freei.Net Asia-Pacific, is the regional headquarters of Freei.Net, which is the fifth largest Internet service provider in the United States.

Under the alliance agreement, the two will "contribute their respective technological strengths toward the development of free Internet businesses in the Asia-Pacific region," SingTel said.

A SingTel spokesman said the company will benefit from its U.S. partner's experience in providing free Internet service.

They expect to generate revenue from online advertising, sponsorships and e-commerce.

The two launched their first free service Monday to SingTel's 1.82 million fixed phone line customers.
