NEW DELHI, Jan. 20 Kyodo
A major world animal rights group will open its first Asian campaign office in India's commercial capital Mumbai this week to preach vegetarianism and prevention of cruelty to animals through a combination of local traditions, western star power and a youth-oriented program.
People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with its 700,000 members including celebrities such as Paul McCartney and Pamela Lee Anderson, wants to encourage Indians, especially the youth, to take to traditional values and be vegetarians.
With its motto "Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on or use for entertainment," PETA hopes to influence Indians to shun meat, milk, and other animal products, avoid products tested on animals, and to wear non-leather shoes and clothing, PETA said in a press release.
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk, who was raised in India, said her experiences in rescuing animals in India led her to found PETA 20 years ago.
