BEIJING, March 1 Kyodo

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has fired Minister of Land and Natural Resources Zhou Yongkang, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday.

The two-sentence announcement did not provide any details or explanation, only noting that his replacement was Tian Fengshan, 59, governor of Heilongjiang Province since 1995.

Although Zhou has not been publicly implicated in any corruption scandals, Beijing has been cracking down on errant officials recently.

On Feb. 18, the official People's Daily carried a report that Premier Zhu Rongji would hold ministers accountable for errant subordinates.
