60% of House Democrats found against permanent MFN for China

WASHINGTON, March 2 Kyodo

About two-thirds of Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are against President Bill Clinton's proposal to grant China permanent most-favored-nation (MFN) trading status, a lawmaker said Thursday.

House Democrat Whip David Bonior told reporters that 128 of the 211 Democrats in the House are against the proposal, which is expected to be presented to Congress this summer.

Whether the proposal can win a majority in the 435-member chamber will depend on House Republicans, more than half of whom are said to be in favor of the proposal.

U.S. labor unions, major backers of the Democrats, are concerned about the negative effects on U.S. workers of freer trade with China if the trade status, which the administration calls "normal trade relations," is given to the country on a permanent basis.
