Fujitsu to build cable network linking Singapore, Sydney

Fujitsu Ltd. said Wednesday it has received an order from Nava Networks Ltd., a U.S. fiber-optic network company, to build an undersea fiber-optic cable network between Singapore, Jakarta and Sydney.

The 9,000-kilometer-long network, dubbed ''Nava-I,'' will be completed in July 2002, meeting the growing demand for telecommunications between Australia and Southeast Asia, Fujitsu said in a statement.

Fujitsu will use its superhigh-bandwidth fiber-optic technology for the cable, which will have transmission capacity of more than 2.56 terabits a second, equivalent to 40 million two-way telephone voice circuits or 64 full-length films of DVD video per second.

Nava Networks will invest around $645 million (about 68.2 billion yen) in the project, Fujitsu said.
