China has become the top country in the world for mobile phone use, with a total of 120,600,000 subscribers at the end of July, Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday, citing government figures.

Xinhua said China has surpassed the United States in the number of mobile phone subscriptions, making China number one in the world. The agency, citing ''latest statistics'' in the U.S., put the number of mobile phone subscriptions in the U.S. at 120,100,000.

The Chinese figure corresponds to 9.2 mobile phones per 100 people.

As the number of mobile phone subscriptions in China topped the 100 million mark at the end of March, the latest figure -- released by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom Industries -- indicates that the number of mobile phones in China increased by more than 20 million in just four months.

The Chinese government projects the number to reach 260 million by the end of 2005.
