Donors may halt aid to Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, June 6 Kyodo

A representative of donors starting a two-day review of aid to Afghanistan said Wednesday in Islamabad the group may stop their humanitarian assistance if the ruling Taliban continue to impose restriction on foreigners.

German Ambassador to Pakistan Hans-Joachim Daerr told a news conference the review meeting would also consider the latest order Tuesday by the Taliban requiring all foreigners to abide by the Taliban's interpretation of the Islamic code of ethics.

An order issued by the Taliban on Tuesday had said all foreigners visiting Afghanistan must not smuggle banned items, not consume alcohol, narcotics or pork in public, not distribute literature, not have sex outside matrimony and not listen to loud music.

The two-day aid review meeting is being attended by representatives of 16-member Afghan Support Group, nongovernmental organizations and officials of various U.N. relief agencies active in Afghanistan.

The ambassador said Kenzo Oshima, U.N. deputy secretary general and emergency relief coordinator for Afghanistan, would brief the participants about the latest political and relief situation in Afghanistan.
