TOKYO, June 8 Kyodo

An international conference to be held in Tokyo next Tuesday and Wednesday is likely to agree to provide Cambodia with some $500 million in aid, sources close to the meeting said Friday.

Japan is expected to donate some $100 million, the largest portion of the aid package, they added.

Japan, the United States, 14 other donor countries and seven international aid agencies such as the World Bank will attend the meeting.

Such meetings began in 1996 to support the reconstruction of war-torn Cambodia and, except in 1998, have since been held annually. Each meeting decided to extend some $500 million in aid to Cambodia.

The coming two-day conference, the third to be held in Japan, will not only discuss financial aid but also macroeconomic policies, poverty, legal system reform and other problems facing Cambodia, the sources said.
