Shan rebels leave hills near Thai border after defeat
Asian Economic News, May 7, 2001
BANGKOK, May 3 Kyodo
Shan rebel fighters pulled out Thursday from two strategic positions near the Thai border after two weeks of attacks by the Myanmar army.
Following heavy bombardment by government troops since Monday, about 200 Shan State Army rebels retreated early Thursday morning from the two strategic posts of Pachee and Noh Lae.
''There is no need to remain in the area and fight a futile positional war,'' the rebels said in a statement.
Myanmar troops retook another strategic post, Hua Nok, from the rebels Wednesday.
All three spots, which had been held by the Myanmar army prior to April 21, are located in eastern Shan State, opposite Thailand's northern province of Chiang Mai. The battle zone is reportedly only 150 meters west of the Myanmar-Thai frontier.
Both sides have accused the other of seeking to control the area to facilitate drug-trafficking activities.
