FEATURE: Chinese cave dwellers still at home and still happy

Asian Economic News, Sept 3, 2001

For those who make it to Yan'an, there are many points of interest, including the former homes of Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai, and a nine-story pagoda built during the Sung Dynasty (960-1279) and now made into a monument to the revolution. The Communists' former military academy is now a revolutionary museum.

Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province and home of the famous terra-cotta warriors buried in the tomb of China's first emperor, is the best jumping-off point for reaching Yan'an. The local office of the China National Tourist Organization can help find a cave home for a temporary stay.
