Brazil to mint gold, silver coins to celebrate World Cup win

Asian Economic News, Oct 28, 2002

RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 25 Kyodo

Brazil will produce a special series of gold and silver coins to celebrate the national soccer team's fifth World Cup title, the Central Bank said Thursday.

The National Monetary Council has authorized the bank to mint the commemorative coins, nearly four months after Brazil's World Cup triumph with a 2-0 win over Germany in the final in Yokohama.

The bank intends to put the coins on sale in December at its local branches, with the gold coins having a face value of 20 real and the silver coins 5 real.

A total of 10,000 gold coins are due to be issued with a plan to increase the volume up to 30,000 depending on demand, while 5,000 silver coins are expected to be produced.

Before this summer's successful campaign in Japan and South Korea, Brazil won the World Cup in 1958, 1962, 1970 and 1994.
