Coal mine blast in China kills 20 workers, 52 people trapped

A gas explosion hit a coal mine in Xiaoyi, Shanxi Province on Saturday, killing at least 20 workers, the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua said.

The toll is expected to grow as 52 people were trapped inside the mine, Xinhua said.

The Chinese coal-mining industry has been mired by numerous accidents. According to the Chinese media, near 10,000 people were killed in coal mine accidents last year, many of them in Shanxi, a major coal-mining region in China.
