NEW DELHI, Dec. 27 Kyodo

The death toll in India from tsunami tidal waves that struck the country on Sunday has risen to 6,800 following recovery of scores of bodies in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and in the Andaman Islands, the Press Trust of India reported Monday.

Tamil Nadu accounted for 3,200 of the fatalities, while some 3,000 deaths were reported in the country's far-flung Andaman and Nicobar islands, according to PTI.

Massive relief operations are under way, with military aircraft and ships delivering food, blankets, medicines and other material to people in the affected areas.
