SINGAPORE, Feb. 16 Kyodo

Singapore and Jordan will likely conclude their negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) and sign the pact by July this year, the Straits Times reported Monday.

Singapore is expected to become the first Southeast Asian nation to have such a pact with a Middle East country when the deal is sealed, the newspaper said.

Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and his Jordanian counterpart Faisal al-Fayez reviewed progress on the negotiations in a meeting Sunday in Jordan where Goh was on a three-day visit as part of his 10-day tour of the region that also includes Egypt and Bahrain, it said.

In Egypt, Goh also agreed with Egyptian leaders on working toward a bilateral free trade deal, the newspaper said.

Singapore has already signed FTAs with the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the European Free Trade Association, which groups Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
