Keeping koi as a hobby first emerged in Singapore in the mid-1980s and hit a peak in 1995. There are now an estimated 1,000 avid koi owners in Singapore, who keep the fish to enjoy their beauty, for investment or to enter the fish in competitions in Japan.
Most Singaporeans tend to buy lower-priced koi for about S$80 to S$100.
