DHAKA, Jan. 24 Kyodo

Bangladesh has banned the import of poultry products and live, one-day-old chicks from seven Asian countries and Taiwan for two months due to fears of bird flu, poultry industry and government officials said Saturday.

The Fisheries and Livestock Ministry decided Wednesday to ban the items from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Pakistan and Taiwan through March 15, they said.

There has been no reported bird flu outbreak in Bangladesh

About 80 poultry farms in Bangladesh imported 344,676 pieces of ''layer'' and 2.2 million pieces of ''broiler'' chicken last year, according to the livestock directorate.

Bangladesh also imports about 3 million one-day-old chicks, or ''parent stock'' chicks, annually.
