The number of people registered as bone-marrow donors in Japan has reached 200,000, a group promoting donor registration said Friday.
It has now set a new target of 300,000 donors, the level believed sufficient to help almost all patients in need.
As of Thursday, there were 200,068 donors registered to provide bone marrow for treatment of diseases such as leukemia, the Japan Marrow Donor Program said.
The group began donor registration in January 1992.
During last year, about 1,300 patients registered on a list of those hoping for bone-marrow transplants, but 40 percent of them have been unable to find a suitable donor, it said.
