TOKYO, Feb. 9 Kyodo
Animated film director Hayao Miyazaki will receive the Honorary Golden Lion award for professional achievements at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival in August, the film producer and distributor Toho Co. said Wednesday.
Miyazaki, 64, will be the first Japanese, and the first director of animated films, to receive the prestigious prize, according to Toho.
''I want to offer my heartfelt appreciation to my friends worldwide who strived to release my work, and people around the world who evaluated the work,'' Miyazaki said in a press release.
Miyazaki won an Oscar in 2003 for the best animated feature for ''Spirited Away.'' That film also received the Golden Bear award in the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival.
At last year's Venice film festival, the Osella outstanding technical contribution award was presented to Studio Ghibli, which made Miyazaki's latest animated film ''Howl's Moving Castle.''
