GANGNEUNG, South Korea, Feb. 17 Kyodo

Japan's Fumie Suguri took top honors with a graceful performance in the women's short program ahead of compatriot Yoshie Onda at the Four Continents Championships on Thursday.

Suguri earned 61.44 points to take the lead, followed by Onda in second with 58.02, heading into Saturday's free skate. American Jennifer Kirk was third after a score of 51.24.

Suguri, who along with Onda is vying for the final spot on the Japanese women's team at the world championships in Moscow next month, gave a near flawless performance in a flowing routine at Gangneung Ice Center.

Asian champion Yukari Nakano got off to a shaky start and placed ninth, while Kim Chae Hwa, a third generation resident of Japan representing South Korea, came 14th in her tournament debut.

In the ice dance competition, American champions Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto widened their lead after the original dance, lifting their score tally to 109.20.

Japanese pair Nozomi Watanabe and Akiyuki Kido (84.15) are fourth, ahead of Nakako Tsuzuki and Kenji Miyamoto (77.22), who are back in seventh.
