Table tennis: Fukuhara, Beijing club fail to ink deal

TOKYO, March 3 Kyodo

Japanese table tennis player Ai Fukuhara has given up on her plan to join Chinese Super League powerhouse Beijing, table tennis officials said Wednesday.

Fukuhara and Beijing had agreed on a one-year professional contract from April but talks hit a snag on details of terms, including a deal involving a team sponsor, making it impossible to complete registration procedures for the new season.

''Time has run out for this season and we don't have any hard feelings toward the Beijing club,'' Fukuhara's father, Takehiko, said after officially turning down an offer from Beijing earlier in the day.

Beijing, which has world No. 1 and Athens Olympic singles champion Zhang Yining in its lineup of top-ranked players, made an offer to Fukuhara last autumn and both sides were said to have come close to finalizing a deal.

The 16-year-old Fukuhara finished in the last 16 of the Athens Olympic singles tournament last summer. In September, she played in a lower-tier Chinese league located below the Super League.
