China gives $200,000 in aid to Philippines to deal with mudflows

Asian Economic News,  Dec 11, 2006

BEIJING, Dec. 5 Kyodo

The Chinese government has given $200,000 to the Philippines as assistance to help victims of last week's typhoon-triggered mudflows that buried several villages, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The Red Cross Society of China will separately provide its Philippine counterpart with $50,000 in aid, ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a regular press conference.

The Philippine Red Cross has estimated that the mudflows on the main Philippine island of Luzon have killed more than 1,000 villagers.
