A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.1 rocked Iceland on Thursday, 50 kilometers east-southeast of the capital Reykjavik, damaging roads and buildings and causing injuries, U.S. media reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 3:46 p.m. local time at a shallow 10 kilometers beneath the earth's surface. Its epicenter was near the town of Selfoss, about 50 kilometers east-southeast of the capital.

The Associated Press said the quake caused injuries but no further information, including how many, is available.

Buildings were damaged near the epicenter, AP said, quoting a local broadcaster.

Iceland is a volcanic island in the north Atlantic.
