Strong earthquake strikes off Indonesia's Sumatra

JAKARTA, March 3 Kyodo

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6 struck off the southwest coast of Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

According to the USGS, the earthquake's epicenter was 140 kilometers southwest of the West Sumatra provincial capital of Padang and 885 km northwest of Jakarta. It struck at 9:37 a.m. and was focused about 23 km under the seabed, the USGS said.

Indonesia, with more than 17,000 islands, is prone to earthquakes.
