East Timor independence leader Xanana Gusmao on Tuesday expressed "heart-felt gratitude" for China's support for East Timor's independence, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. Gusmao, who is in Beijing on the first leg of a six-nation Asian tour, expressed his gratitude when he met with Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao, the report said.

Gusmao was quoted by Xinhua as saying that developing good relations with China is in the interests of the East Timorese people. He briefed Hu on the latest developments in East Timor and proposals for the establishment of a country in the territory.

In the meeting, Hu said that China, as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has played an important role in pushing forward a proper settlement of the East Timor issue, Xinhua said.

Hu told Gusmao the Chinese government will continue to support East Timor's independence and provide as much assistance as it can for its reconstruction, according to Xinhua.

Gusmao will also visit South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.
